High winds rip down scaffolding, trees, power lines in Massachusetts

High winds in Massachusetts left trees down, streets closed and thousands without power Friday as some gusts reached over 65 mph, prompting wind warnings and advisories across the state.

In Boston, four stories of scaffolding blew off a building at Beacon and Exeter streets in the city's Back Bay.

Boston Fire said they were called to 299 Beacon St. at about 11 a.m. after the scaffolding fell on the Beacon Street side of the building. It landed on two parked cars. No workers were at the site at the time, and no injuries were reported.

A piece of the scaffolding on the Exeter Street side was also flipped by the wind, but was caught by a tree.

A high wind warning for gusts up to 60 mph is posted until 7 p.m. Friday for parts of Middlesex, Worcester counties and counties further west. A wind advisory for gusts of 50 mph is up for eastern and southeastern Massachusetts until 7 p.m.

Part of the roof of the Whittenton Mills building in Taunton was ripped off by high winds on Friday. Crews in hazmat suits were at the property collecting the torn pieces of tar paper and other potentially dangerous materials.

A Taunton city official said the complex of six old mill buildings is in the process of being demolished and developed into 390 units.

There were reports of trees and branches down across the region, knocking out power to thousands. Several roads were also blocked and impassible.
